Due to the amount of time it takes to build, ship and clear customs, the truck had to be done before Christmas.  This was going to be a challenge.

About 2 weeks later, we had the truck as the owner had some trouble tracking down a 6-Speed.

Original plans were to add a large transfer fuel tank with a tool box for the bed. But, due to the 2-3 week build time on the tank, and the amount of room that would be left in the bed, that idea was scrapped. The best alternative was 5 gallon gas cans. We designed the bedcage to be bolt-on in sections so that its modular and has the ability for more storage.

There were also plans for other modifications that just couldn’t be completed given the time constraints.

Huntington Beach, CA – The 2011 Best in the Desert Transwest Ford Henderson 250 race was not only the last race of the season but was also a double point’s event. This event gives valuable points needed to move up in the rankings if you place well and can make or break teams if they have poor results. With the pressure on at the last race of the year, teams needed to be on their A game. Camburg Racing did just that, but in qualifying suffered a rollover that cost a valuable starting position. The practice lap went very well with a time around 3m 55s that if it counted would have had the #75 Camburg Racing General Tire Trick Truck starting in the Top 10. Obviously practice laps don’t count so #75 would be starting all the way in the back in the 36th starting position.

Immediately after qualifying the crew headed to the hotel parking lot to assess the truck. The major damage was to most of the fiberglass body panels and the driver side front shocks. During the crash the front shocks were ripped apart during the violent roll. Loaded up, Jason Campbell and Scott Zindroski drove from Henderson, NV to Santee, CA that night where Fox is located. The entire race crew at Fox Racing Shox immediately started rebuilding them at 6am Friday morning and was able to turn them around in just over an hour. Now back underway Jason and Scott drove back to Henderson to finish the 600 mile road trip to get the shocks back on the truck to go through tech and contingency. Working all day fueled on Monster Energy, the team was able to have the truck body fixed by 3pm just as Jason and Scott pulled up with the shocks. It could have not been planned any better. Camburg passed tech inspection and had the #75 ready to do battle the following day.

Piloting the #75 Camburg TT on race day was long time racing veteran and 2008 Best in the Desert Trick Truck Champion Jerry Whelchel with Craig Hall as co-driver. Starting at the back, JW picked off the competition one by one and at the end of the 1st lap was in the Top 10. Pulling into main pit on the start of the 2nd lap, the Camburg Racing General Tire TT got a splash of VP race fuel and was back out on course quickly. On Lap 2 Jerry was able to catch and pass a few more trucks putting the #75 into the top 7 in class. With nightfall just around the corner, on the start of the 3rd and last lap JW pulled into main pit for fuel and the light bar loaded up with KC HiLite’s Carbon Fiber HID lights. During the installation of the light bar the team ran into a problem from the rollover as the cannon plug was slightly damaged. The team worked their magic but unfortunately it took about 5 minutes to get back under way. Starting the last lap Camburg Racing was 8th position on corrected time but with Jerry’s driving skills and how well the KINETIK Trick Truck was working, the #75 made up huge gaps and passed most of the competition.

The #75 Camburg Racing Trick Truck crossed the finish line 4th physical in class and on corrected time took home the 3rd place podium finish and was the first General Tire TT to finish the race. This finish helped move the team up from 9th to a solid 6th overall for the 2011 season in the Unlimited Trick Truck among near 50 competitors.

Wednesday before the race, the Trick Truck’s and Unlimited buggies had their qualifying event 20 minutes north of Las Vegas at an undisclosed location. The field of over 60 vehicles set out to do a practice lap and then staged in the blistering sun. Camburg was 9th off the line and threw down a competitive lap time. Qualifiers are staggered every 1 minute, but a fellow competitor ahead blew an engine and was being towed off course which added 3-5 seconds to their overall time from the distraction. BITD officials gave the option to re-do the run but the team declined the opportunity as they felt they had a fast enough run to not have to beat up the truck more, when this race is the longest and most challenging. The #75 truck qualified 14th in class and 22nd overall.

Come race day the team staged in Beatty and the chase trucks headed out to their respective pits. Starting the race with Championship Winning Jerry Whelchel in the driver’s seat and Craig Hall as co-driver, they were off the line at 9:52 am. By mile 100 on corrected time, Camburg was in the top 10 overall and 8th in class and steadily moving forward. With a flawless race so far, Jerry stopped at Pit 5 for fuel. Quickly back under way they were to race speed and moving up positions as the General Grabber race tires we’re hooking up in the Nevada desert.

Coming into Pit 10 at Mina 359 miles into the race, the Camburg team was now 4th in position and 3rd on corrected time. Whelchel pulled into the pits for fuel and a possible driver change with Jerry Zaiden. Now sitting on a podium position it was decided to keep Whelchel in the seat as positions were only minutes apart. With a stellar pit stop they were back on course.

Just past Pit 13 according to live timing by Race-Dezert.com, Camburg was close to 1st place on corrected time. With nearly 80 miles to the finish the pace was slowed when the driveshaft met its fate on a huge rock. This dent caused a bad vibration over 80 mph, but with this section of the course being slow and twisty it was decided to drive through it as to stop and change it would add too much time with everyone still so close. Shortly after Pit 14 they got around another truck that was actually behind them on corrected time and hit a huge rock in dust that peeled the beadlock ring back and caused the tire to deflate. A portion of the tire then wrapped around the axle housing and brakes, thankfully it didn’t take out the brake lines. This is where time was lost and Camburg fell down a few positions. Still hoping for a strong finish, Whelchel charged to the finish line in the low light.

The #75 Camburg Racing Trick Truck crossed the finish line in 10hrs 18mn 49 sec placing 4th in class and 7th overall only minutes from the podium. Now sitting in 5th and only 17 points out of 1st for the year with two races to go, expect to see some great racing at Parker and Henderson.

Great 4th of July weekend down on the pacific side of the Baja Peninsula!! The race was held on July 3 at the new Hotel Paraiso Property in Punta Colonet. We showed up early for the registration and got seated 2nd behind last seasons and current overall local champs in the 7s class (Frank Felix  and crew who are the owners of pirates cove in Camalu). We almost rolled in the first silty corner on the side of a hill but kept the truck alive with our 5.5 kit helping keep the tire under the truck. There were some really fun rolling hills and a few sketchy barbwire fence skimmers. As usual a few stubborn cows and some wild horses were staking post along the course. After the first lap we were gaining on the leader every lap with Sergio Leon pressing hard behind us for the first 6 of 8 laps. We held on and kicked it up a notch the last lap and finished in 2nd place. The race staff, Hotel Paraiso, and all the locals were great and very helpful. Acosaq is a really fun race series with races from Colonet to El Rosario all just off the famous Highway 1. All classes have payback! with an overall purse and payback at the end of the season for the top 2 finishers in each class.
 
After the race we got some great surf, $10 lobsters, caught some fish standing on the beach sipping on some coldies, and went on a solo 60 mile fun ride down the baja coast and back!

Connor Hisgen to be Camburg Racing and FMF’s newest desert racer!

Camburg Engineering a state of the art manufacturing facility in Huntington Beach, CA is known for high end off-road suspension systems and KINETIK Trophy Truck builds. Camburg’s Suspension has earned many off-road desert racing championships and wins to many teams over the years. Drivers include 2008 and 2009 SCORE champion and driver of the year Heidi Steele, Baja 250 and 1000 winner Marc Burnett, SNORE champion Richard Blunk, multiple SCORE champion Mark Growe, and many more.

Desert racing is a passion that is usually introduced to us when we are young. Connor Hisgen is the son of one of Camburg Racing’s Baja support crew and avid desert rider Brad Hisgen. 14 year old Connor a GATE student holds a GPA near 4.0 and is involved in his church youth group at Rock Harbor in Costa Mesa, CA. Connor recently made a tough choice to not continue a new year on his All Star baseball team. Passion to race desert on a motorcycle took over Connor’s other passion of baseball.

Connor is currently racing in the mini class in the USDR series and select District 37 events. Last year Connor ranked 3rd out of 30. This year Connor has won a few D37 races including a National Hare and Hound, and a Dual Euro Scramble.

Huntington Beach, CA – Prior to the BITD Silverstate 300, Camburg Racing teamed up with long time and championship winning driver Jerry Whelchel to take the reins of the KINETIK Trick Truck at the SNORE / General Tires Mint 400 Race. Whelchel not only qualified the truck well but was a front runner during the race until the 3rd member in the driveline let go on the last lap. Then after swapping the diff, Jerry Zaiden got in the driver’s seat and drove the truck to the finish. With 2.5 hours of down time he was still able to finish 9th in class. After the race it was decided to make Whelchel a permanent asset to the team for 2011.

With Whelchel on board, there was plenty of excitement coming into the BITD Silverstate 300 race. Heading out to Vegas, the team stopped in Barstow to shake the truck down prior to qualifying for the race. Everything was running great until the transmission started having issues shifting into 3rd. They loaded up the truck and headed for Vegas where they changed the transmission that night and did a once over as qualifying was the next day.

The qualifying course this race was tight and well suited for buggies. Camburg ran strong and qualified 6th in class and after decided to change the 3rd member to a lower gear ratio for the race. Meanwhile the “now spare” transmission was driven down to Culhane Racing Transmissions where, Steve and his crew stopped everything and did a full rebuild and found that a rubber seal had failed causing a loss in pressure. With great customer service from Culhane the transmission was back in Vegas 14 hours later.

Staged in Alamo Saturday morning Whelchel was off the starting line 6th in class and was on a mission. On corrected time Camburg’s #75 truck was up to 3rd place until around mile 60 the alternator stopped working. They pulled into Pit 1 and spent about 25 minutes getting the alternator changed out. With down time this soon into the race, it only made the task running up front that much harder. Whelchel pushed hard, made up positions but then ran into engine problems coming into Pit 3.

At Pit 3 fuel was replenished, the truck was gone over and the engine ECU was reset and cleared of all error codes. Back under way the truck seemed to be running better but soon encountered the same issues. At this point Whelchel was going for a finish and ran a conservative pace.

Unfortunately at mile 277 just 26 miles before the finish the engine stopped running completely and the Camburg truck came to a stop. Trouble shooting every possible system, the team was faced with a DNF for the race.

A week later with the engine out of the truck  Turn Key discovered that the internal crank trigger wheel rotated 1″ on the crankshaft causing the ignition and fuel injection systems to not operate correctly.

Huntington Beach, CA – Finishing 7th overall in points for 2010, coming into 2011 Team Camburg re-strategized and is focused on raising the bar now that they have a year of racing & development under their belts with the KINETIK Camburg Racing General Tire Trick Truck.

Best in the Desert’s Parker 425 event not only starts off the racing season but draws the most racers and spectators. The field was stacked this year with close to 80 unlimited race vehicles with drivers and teams like Robby Gordon, Terrible Herbst Motorsports, BJ Baldwin, Andy McMillin and celebrity Jesse James among many others entered just for this particular race. The best of the best were in Parker, Arizona this year.

For the unlimited classes, BITD has a qualifying event 2 days prior to dictate starting position for Saturday’s race. Jason Campbell driving with Craig Hall placed 47th in a field of almost 70 vehicles qualifying.

Caravanning through the streets of downtown Parker and off the starting line early Saturday morning Jason Campbell and Craig Hall in TT #75 set a commanding pace early on. Coming into the sandy downhill section around mile 4-5, a class 1 buggy that started two positions ahead rolled and was blocking the course. Jim Beaver in TT #15 and Jason attempted to push the buggy off course and in doing so both got stuck. Luckily for everyone behind them they were able to clear the path. After being stuck for nearly 20 minutes they were back under way with a field of 30+ slower cars & trucks ahead of them. One by one Jason picked off each position through the heavy dust and early morning light.

Coming into the infield python section Jason was making up lost time and one of the faster trucks though the berm and jump sections. He came into main pit for fuel only and a quick inspection. With everything a go they were back on course in 28 seconds. Lap 2 couldn’t have gone any better; no issues and they were making up lost time on a course that was getting torn up quickly.

The end of 2nd lap, Jason pulled into main pit for 40 gallons of VP race fuel, a visual inspection and for Jerry Zaiden to step in and drive #75 to the finish line. Jerry set a pace that would insure a strong finish. If a team DNF’s this race, it is a huge hurdle to over come at the end of the year with the amount of points the race is worth.

Just before 5pm Jerry and Craig crossed the finish line 11th in class and 28th overall in 9 hr 05 mn 34 sec. With 211 starters and only 116 finishers, it shows how brutal the Parker 425 course is. Not only does it tear up equipment but it tests driver’s ability to drive fast and push hard on a course that changes lap to lap. Camburg had zero flats and the General Grabber Race Tires worked flawless. Turn Key’s GM LSX engine ran great all day with no issues.

With a successful first race, the Camburg team is excited about racing the entire BITD schedule and also the upcoming SNORE General Tire Mint 400. With Lucas Oil producing BITD’s TV coverage, 2011 will be an exciting season seen by all.
